What does a Production Operator do, anyway?

Pham Thi Diep Thuy is Production Operator at Pepperl+Fuchs Vietnam. Here she is sitting at her workplace.

Phạm Thị Diệp Thúy applied to work in production at the Pepperl+Fuchs branch in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in 2011, on a friend’s recommendation. She has worked in the production of various product lines since she was hired. She also discovered her talent for yoga at Pepperl+Fuchs.

Does your name, Phạm Thị Diệp Thúy, mean anything?
Thúy Pham: Traditionally, almost all Vietnamese names have a meaning, as does my name. Phạm is my family name, and Thị means “girl.” My middle name, Diệp, and first name, Thúy, mean “elegant and gentle.”

What is your typical working day like?
Thúy Pham: It starts with me getting a production order from the team leader, including things like the material list and instructions. Then I get the necessary parts ready and check whether the machines and equipment are all set. After that, I follow the instructions for assembling the parts into precursor products or finished devices.

What is especially important in your work?
Thúy Pham: The most important factor is precision in carrying out the process and in the individual work steps. There are clear quality criteria that must be met for the subsequent production steps to go smoothly and the finished product to meet the high standards of Pepperl+Fuchs.

What do you like most about your work?
Thúy Pham: I really like working in a friendly environment, with supervisors who support me and colleagues I get along with, both on and off the job. We have a pleasant corporate culture which affects our interpersonal relations very positively.

And what do you especially like about Pepperl+Fuchs as an employer?
Thúy Pham: Compared to other companies in Vietnam, Pepperl+Fuchs offers many advantages with the additional benefits it provides to employees. For example, Pepperl+Fuchs really pays attention to the health and wellbeing of its employees. There are many different options that are very popular among employees. For example, you can play pool or table tennis in the fitness and games area at the branch, and there are exercise and dance classes and a reading corner. Many of my colleagues take advantage of these options when the working day is over to improve their health or relax. I myself took my very first yoga class at Pepperl+Fuchs eight years ago, for example…

THE MIND–BODY CONNECTION: Regular yoga practice keeps Phạm Thị Diệp Thúy feeling great all around.

…and it ended up having an impact.
Thúy Pham: It definitely did. I liked yoga so much that I signed up for a training course in hatha yoga and got certified to teach. I’ve been teaching at a yoga center myself since 2016. I also practice it with colleagues here at the site three days a week after work, which I hope will contribute to their wellbeing. Yoga is wonderful for me, too, of course. I feel healthier and am in better shape for work. Yoga has an overall positive impact on the body and mind.

Do you have other hobbies?
Thúy Pham: I love to travel and enjoy new environments. I like discovering the beauty of different areas and getting to know the people there, experiencing their day-to-day lives and trying the local foods.
